World Book & Copyright Day is coming

 

 

Every year on April 23, the world officially celebrates the World Book & Copyright Day, a worldwide tribute to books, authors, culture and knowledge. April 23 is a symbolic date in world literature. The day was first established by UNESCO in 1995, with the goal of promoting the enjoyment of books and reading by remembering several prominent authors who died on that day, such as William Shakespeare, Miguel Cervantes and Inca Garcilaso de la Vega.

On this occasion, UNESCO in collaboration with other international organizations of publishers, booksellers and libraries, select the The World Book Capital of the year. The selected city or town has the responsibility as well as the honor to maintain the impetus of this world celebration through its own events and initiatives.

The World Book Capital for 2020 Kuala Lumpur for its effort on inclusive education and for the many initiatives focused on creating a knowledge-based society, in which reading is accessible for everybody.

The World Book & Copyright Day has become a platform of shared knowledge and information not only for the publishing industry, but also for millions of people all around the world. On this day and during the month of April, UNESCO shares quotes, poems and messages to symbolize the power of books and encourage reading.
